Arsenal slipped to 10th in the table after a 2-0 defeat at home to Swansea on Saturday. The man I highlighted in my preview, Michu, was the player that scored twice in the last 2 minutes to defeat the Gunners. I should really stop highlighting dangerous players, as I said that Huntelaar and Afellay were the two to watch out for when Schalke visited the Emirates in the Champions League and both scored in their 2-0 win. Michu netted a brace in another 2-0 defeat for Arsenal.
I must admit, I did not watch this game as I was busy on Saturday. I was out during Match of the Day as well and didn’t bother recording it after I heard the score. I watched the two goals on Match of the Day 2 on Sunday night and that was enough torture for me. I can’t say I’m surprised by this result. It used to really hurt me when Arsenal lost matches, especially having seen them go 49 games unbeaten. Now the feeling of hurt isn’t as strong, not because I don’t love the club, I love Arsenal just as much as I did when they won stuff regularly, just now it has come to the stage where my expectations have been lowered. I expect Arsenal to drop points in games like this or just scrape by against ‘smaller’ teams, whereas back in the glory days they would have beaten teams by 3 or 4 goals on a regular basis and at the start of the season I used to expect us to challenge on all four fronts back then, whereas nowadays it is 3rd, 4th or 5th plus potentially the League Cup.
There is no question that the team aren’t performing to their capabilities. This team is talented enough to finish 3rd or 4th in the league. At the moment they are playing like a mid-table side (hence their position!). They look great one week and then drop stupid games that they should be winning comfortably. A prime example of this would be winning the North London Derby 5-2 and then in the next game they draw 0-0 with an Aston Villa side that will be fighting relegation this season!.
The draw for the FA Cup third round was made on Sunday afternoon. Arsenal were drawn away to Swansea, the day after their 2-0 defeat at home to them. I think Wenger will most likely field a weakened side and unfortunately I could see us taking a beating there. Swansea manager Michael Laudrup said earlier in the season that he wanted to get Swansea to a Cup Final this year. They’re still in the League Cup and I’d imagine he will take the FA Cup seriously too. It’s very hard the way that we are playing to see a good result coming from this cup draw. We’ll have to wait and see. Perhaps by then we will have some kind of form going into it. You only have to look up the road at Tottenham and see that a couple of weeks ago we were beating them 5-2 and some Spurs fans were already putting pressure on AVB. A few decent results later and things aren’t looking so bad. The way we are playing right now though, I can’t say I can see us stringing together 2 wins in a row, let alone putting a run together!.
