It has been one of the worst kept secrets of Arsenal FC in recent weeks, as there were so many reports stating it was true I thought it was official. However today Arsenal have officially announced that boss Arsene Wenger has signed a 3 year contract deal, which means that is he stays for the duration of that contract he will have served as Arsenal manager for two whole decades.

Arsene Wenger, despite his critics, has been the most successful Arsenal manager in history, collecting three league titles, 5 FA Cups and 4 Charity/Community shields. He also took charge of the famous ‘Invincibles’ who went an entire league campaign unbeaten in the 2003-4 and is the only Arsenal manager to take his side to a Champions League final.

  • Wenger has been in charge of Arsenal for a total of 1010 matches, an incredible achievement in anyone’s eyes, and has maintained a win ratio of 57% in all competitions. Combined with his recent FA cup win it seemed inevitable that he would sign a new contract and most fans will be delighted he has done so. Why are some fans not a fan of his management?

Some fans, along with TV ‘personality’ and former newspaper editor Piers Morgan, have been on social media over the previous season trying to apply pressure to the Arsenal board to remove Wenger with their #WengerOut campaign. They feel his lack of a plan B and an over reliance on young players has hampered the team in recent years and has led to the 9 year trophy drought suffered by Arsenal until the recent FA cup win.

I think Wenger deserves his new contract and no other manager would have done any better over the previous 9 years, especially given how well he has run the club financially since taking over.
