Arsenal Must Perform Against Anderlecht To Banish Hull Demons

With the poor performance against Hull still fresh in everyone’s mind we have to look at performing well against Anderlecht in the Champions League to get it out of our system. And this means the entire team playing better, not just the midfield. We also need to realise that we do not deserve to win because we play the prettiest football, and we must nullify any threat the Belgian side pose, because the next match against Sunderland will be tough as well with the Black Cats still reeling from the 8-0 drumming they received at the weekend.

Arsenal need to perform better against Anderlecht than they did against Hull

Anderlecht have only picked up a point so far in the Champions League Group stages but it’s not for a lack of decent performances. They were comprehensively blown out of the water by Borussia Dortmund, but going to Galatasaray and picking up a point in Turkey is no mean feat. We will need to be on top of our game to take something away from the game, or at least a lot better than we were at the weekend.

More from European Comps

Although they are playing in a ‘lower’ league then the EPL it is important to understand that Anderlecht have some quality players at their disposal. Steven Defour has long proved to be their go to player in big matches and he will probably be important for them on Tuesday night however the game is going.

If I was going to suggest one thing for Arsenal going into the match it would be that we can’t let easy goals slip, no matter how many goals we score at the other end. Mertesacker needs to realise that there is a thing called running, and that he is allowed to attack the ball in his effort to clear the ball from his own box. Watching him stand still as Hernandez ran round him to put Hull in the lead at the weekend was so depressing. It was like Mertesacker was running in syrup.

All in all we need to play better than we did against Hull and we need to keep the momentum going into the weekend, because every single time we win one game we seem to look like a group of players that have never seen each other in the next. There seems to be no team spirit at the moment and that has to change, and the only way it can is by winning matches.
