A Closer Look At Tomorrow’s Opponent’s Sunderland

After a poor performance against Hull in the EPL and scraping through against Anderlecht in midweek Arsenal will be looking to reinvigorate the team with a solid performance this weekend against Sunderland. Here at Pain in the Arsenal, we thought we’d take a closer look at the next match opponents.

Arsenal face Sunderland at what could be a very good time or a very bad time, depending on how manager Poyet gets his players to react to last week’s 8-0 thumping at the hands of Southampton. They could either continue to dwell on the result and leave themselves open to a repeat performance, or we could see a backlash from players trying to prove to the fans that their team is worthy of support. But either way, we will want to make sure we are on top of our game, either to capitalise on the poor performance or fight off a resurgent Sunderland.

Key Players:

Sunderland. SEBASTIEN LARSSON. A-. So far Larsson has been one of the players of the season, especially in terms of players no-one expected. He’s created a large number of chances and been the main creative force for Sunderland going forward, and if he plays well then Sunderland will have a chance. If he doesn’t then they will struggle when going forward.. Right Midfield

Sunderland. STEVEN FLETCHER. B-. Fletcher has struggled a bit this season but he has improved in recent weeks, scoring twice in the match before last. His work rate and constant effort against Southampton meant he was one of the few players to come out of that match with any ounce of respect  . Striker

How will they play?

Sunderland will look to play fast football when they have the ball, and get at us when they don’t. They have one of the league’s most imposing (ie aggressive tacklers) midfielders in Lee C(l)attermole and they will not allow us time to play pretty football in front of their back four and they will look to expose us wide defensively. God help me if Mertesacker leaves another striker free in the box I might cry, because they will put enough balls into the box to exploit any space we give them.
