Have Arsenal Found Arsene Wenger’s Successor in Paul Clement?

One of the biggest topics of the past half decade at Arsenal has been Arsene Wenger’s status with the club. After an extensive trophy drought and players being sold left and right, many had been (and still are) calling for the Frenchman to be replaced. But it’s become quite evident, even according to Ivan Gazidis, that one of the main influences in the category of who will replace Arsene Wenger – is Arsene Wenger.

Wenger probably has the most power of anyone at Arsenal, and he’s without a doubt in charge of his own destiny. But all managers must move on at some point, and that means the Prof will too.

No one can doubt what Wenger has done for the club. He brought about the greatest year in Arsenal history, the Invincibles of 2003-2004. He’s won countless honors and revolutionized English football, from the inclusion of foreign managers to the diet of the players. But again, all must move on.

The man that’s rumored to be next up is Paul Clement, who is currently assisting Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, which is invaluable experience, no doubt. He’s spent time at Chelsea, Blackburn, Ireland and Fulham, having begun his coaching career at the ripe age of 23. But he’s never been the head guy, the gaffer.

Along with being one of the highest rated coaches in the world, Clement is also English, which fits hand-in-hand with the onslaught of Englishman at the Emirates and the two could be far more than coincidental.

Wenger has to approve who his successor will be, as he is heavily involved in the search. Clement, while a risky choice, would fit the Arsenal mold. If nothing else, the fact that he has no experience at the top of any club would allow him to create his own brand of football (no doubt influenced by Wenger).

I’m a big proponent of the idea of Arsene Wenger grooming a replacement, and I think Clement could fit perfectly. What do you think?
