Eduardo Vargas is being linked to Arsenal, and this is not the first time, as he was rumored to be making the move to the Emirates even before Alexis Sanchez did. Now that the Chilean mastermind is championing his North London side to anyone with ears, Vargas, seeing as how he has ears, is likely to be hearing how the Emirates is a land flowing with milk and honey.

But how much of this link is to be believed and how much is just blind hype at the fact that Eduardo Vargas is yet again sparking at the international level?

The Telegraph has reported that Vargas is what could be considered a “shock” transfer candidate, and that may be a good way to look at it.

There are several factors to approach individually when considering the credibility of Eduardo Vargas coming to Arsenal. First of all, lets decide if Vargas is even a possibility to move from his current club.

The answer is a resounding yes, and that is probably one of the main reasons why this rumor is picking up so much steam. Eduardo Vargas is owned by Napoli but spent last season under-performing on loan at QPR, where he only managed four goals in 22 appearances. As such, with Napoli out of the Champions League and Vargas’s stock climbing, it makes an incredible amount of sense that he would be on the move.

Could that move lead him to Arsenal?

Potentially. Arsenal are on the fence over whether or not they need a new striker or not. The 25-year old Chilean would only fetch around 11 million pounds and with all things considered, I can think of worse investments. Eduardo Vargas has made a habit out of shining at the international level and as the leading scorer of the Copa America, the same is happening again.

The major hang up with Eduardo Vargas is whether or not he can convert that international success to club success. Ever since he joined Napoli, he has had a Joel Campbell-like adventure of loan after loan with pockets of success and pockets of failure. That kind of player may seem silly from an Arsenal perspective but a change of scenery may do him the world of good.

Not only that, but the guy is oozing with confidence and playing alongside the poster-child of Chile may turn his speckled club history around. Even if he does not turn into a goal scoring machine, Eduardo Vargas still has the tenacity that most Chilean’s seem to exude and he could turn into a Danny Welbeck situation where the goals are still in waiting but the team contribution is top notch.

The upside of the move is massive and the downside is not even all that down. Spending 11 million pounds on a guy that could turn into a goal scorer for years to come is a bargain buy of epic proportions. Spending 11 million on a guy that contributes well to team play, filches a few goals, and provides depth in the attack is a good, solid deal. But it’s not all about how good the fit is.

One problem with this rumor is the lack of concrete evidence backing it up. The only thing that the move is based off of is this rumor that Alexis Sanchez is “begging” Arsene Wenger to sign Vargas. As opposed to the Arturo Vidal rumors that gained enough steam to be addressed by Vidal’s agent, Vargas’s connection has not even provided a single credible quote.

However, a rumor has to start somewhere.

As a brief intermission, consider this goal that he scored against Peru to send them to the Copa America final:

Looks like something I would not mind seeing at the Emirates. But would he be just another Joel Campbell or would the Chilean connection jump start his club career?

For 11 million pounds, I would go for it, but last I checked I was not Arsene Wenger. It seems like a distinct possibility that having Alexis alongside could immensely benefit Vargas and Arsenal alike.
