There have been many fans that have said the current Arsenal squad is the best we have had since the glory days of the Invincibles (via ESPNFC).

When you look at some of the teams that we have fielded in the past, it is quite difficult to argue with this theory. Yes, we’ve come a long way from having the likes of Marouane Chamakh spearheading our attack and nervously watching Manuel Almunia tending to the Arsenal goal.

Instead, we can now boast the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil. In other words, Arsenal supporters now have the world class players they have been longing to see play at Emirates Stadium. In addition, Sanchez and Ozil have a host of supporting players, which is good for balancing the team and squad rotation as the season moves along. Put those players together with a new, proven goalkeeper and you have yourself a team that is perfectly capable of winning the league.

Now, that statement might sound easy to write, so allow me to make the case for this team. There is a glaring difference this season compared to those in the past, and that is the fact that we haven’t had any marquee players that are head and shoulders above the rest. We simply have not had a designated player that we could rely upon to step up and use their unrivaled quality to get us through the toughest of games. I cannot name a single player that has recently come through our club that has universally been defined as “world-class”.

Now we have two.

Both Ozil and Sanchez are difference makers, and that is exactly what we have been lacking. They have talent that is unmatched when compared to their teammates. That isn’t a knock on the others, it simply speaks to the superior level of their play. If you look at our main rivals, they each have one or more players in their team that have been brought in to put make a positive impact in the most crucial of games.

Ozil and Sanchez do exactly that for Arsenal.

And as much as we talk about the big players, a championship cannot be won without depth. Again, this is also something that we have lacked. Not only is there now depth in the squad, but there is also quality which is perhaps even more important.

There is enough talent in our roster to field two teams, and this should help with squad rotation when fatigue and injuries hit, and they inevitably will. What’s more, there is competition within the team for the first time in a long while, as players are fighting for a place in the starting eleven. This is something that will better the team overall, as each player will be playing at their peak.

And while we can now boast a formidable outfield, it is undeniable that bringing in a world class goalkeeper is what will finally see us challenge for the title this year. One cannot understate the influence that signing Cech will have on our chances, because we have been lacking a proven winner in net for too long. As John Terry put it, Cech could save us 10-15 points this season, which might just be the difference in the run-in.

Now that all the pieces have been put into place, Arsenal is more ready than ever to get the job done. Unlike years past, they are now realistically able to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea for the title.
