Arsenal Need Not Worry About Losing Aaron Ramsey to Spain

Aaron Ramsey made some questionable comments concerning his future and the interest that Barcelona has supposedly shown in him, telling reporters (via the Telegraph): “Obviously it’s very flattering. One day I would like to go over to Spain to play just to see what it’s like and to experience that, but at the moment I’m with Arsenal and I feel like this Arsenal team can go and be successful and challenge for things.”

Nobody associated with Arsenal can be happy with the ‘I would like to go over to Spain’ bit. Aaron Ramsey is a star at Arsenal, and it is all thanks to his hard work and dedication and the faith that Arsene Wenger had in him. At just 24 years of age, he still has plenty of time to develop and iron out the rough patches, and you can bet that he will. He had an absolute breakout season in 2013/14 and followed it up with a solid, yet injury-riddled 2014/15 where he was forced to play right wing.

Now, Aaron Ramsey wants his spot back and he is fully prepared to compete for that spot.

Rumors were rolling in that Aaron Ramsey was the target of a 50 million pound bid from Barcelona. Arsenal are familiar with the pain of losing a key player to Barcelona as Cesc Fabregas made that trip a couple years ago. Some have said it is impossible to say no to Barcelona or Real Madrid, but Aaron Ramsey has at least committed to Arsenal for the time being.

The situation looks a lot like his countryman, Gareth Bale’s, situation when he left Tottenham behind. Bale was 24 when he moved to Real Madrid, and he was quoted as saying: “When Real Madrid comes in it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. I think if I didn’t take it I would probably regret it for the rest of my life.” He also noted that “For me I want to be playing in the Champions League but also winning trophies,” (via IBT).

There is no doubt that Aaron Ramsey sees and has spoken to Gareth Bale about playing in Spain and the success he is having there. But that is the key in this situation: Success. Gareth Bale left Tottenham because they were not winning anything. He had a long history at the club, but the allure of trophies pulled him away.

The same scenario would probably play out with Aaron Ramsey if Arsenal do not find success soon. The kicker, however, is that they have found success. They are back-to-back FA Cup winners and they have been in the Champions League every year for the past two decades.

Is that enough to satisfy a thirst for success? Probably not. Arsenal need to win some major trophies to avoid this situation getting any stickier than it is. Aaron Ramsey has become a staple for this team and he has expressed his desire to become one of the best midfielders in the world. He has that opportunity at Arsenal but he has to be given the central midfield spot that he excelled at.

I have been overly adamant over how much I think Aaron Ramsey should be captain of this squad, and that would be another way to lock him in, maybe as the icing on the cake.

In the end, Arsenal need to make sure to maintain Aaron Ramsey. He would be successful at Barcelona and we do not want that sickening feeling of seeing him succeed in another teams colors. And if he does not succeed then he would come back to the Premier League and do something crazy like join Liverpool. Either way, not a good outcome.
