Arsenal: Falcao Resurrection Could Mean Scintillating Summer

With Radamel Falcao officially leaving Chelsea after his loan deal ended, Arsenal could attempt a resurrection of the Colombian, resulting in a truly scintillating Summer.

Arsenal are on the hunt for a striker. That much is clear through Arsene Wenger’s appraisal of many of the best strikers around Europe. He recently refused to deny Arsenal were interested in Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette, while playing up the quality of Jamie Vardy during the very public bid.

Before the doomed Vardy move, much of Arsenal’s rumored interest in the best strikers across Europe was just that, rumored. There was no real standing to such reports and nothing to indicate that Wenger was ever willing to act on his apparent interest.

However, the very existence in Arsenal’s move for Vardy means that Wenger has clearly highlighted striker as a position of need this Summer. Wenger is right, Arsenal do need a striker, but they shouldn’t bid for any old goal scorer.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

With the possibility of the Premier League in the coming season, Arsenal need to sign the right player. That player is someone who compliments the skills, and more importantly, weaknesses of current starter Olivier Giroud. Giroud is outstanding in open play, he is strong on the ball, an excellent target man for Arsenal’s creative midfielders to play off and excellent in the air.

However, his main weakness can be found in the goals column. Simply put, Giroud, for all his abilities, does not score enough goals.

This is where once world beater Radamel Falcao comes in. The Colombian was one of the hottest properties only a few years ago. After two years with Porto, where he scored 25 goals in 28 games and 16 goals in 22 games, Falcao moved to Atletico Madrid where he truly found his stardom.

The next two years saw him score 52 league goals in 68 games. A record that is as good as any striker in Europe. However, injury and poor management since then has seen his career fade into insignificance, and after a year in which he was hardly noticed at Chelsea, his loan deal with the London club has now ended, returning to Monaco.

Falcao certainly struggled in English football. He looked sluggish and lethargic, having likely lost that burst of pace that he once had due to injuries. However, if he can return to the player he once was, a true goal scorer, then Arsenal should be looking at him.

It would be a great resurrection of a now 30 year old, but if Wenger felt that he could get the best out of the old dog, then it could well turn into the deal of the Summer.
