Olivier Giroud has stated that he and all of his teammates are desperate for Arsene Wenger to stay, revealing that Arsenal’s future comes from the past.

The prevailing storyline this season has centred on one word: contracts. Arsenal and their many players with their dwindling contracts and hordes of worries fans have transpired to dig themselves into a rather deep and dark hole.

Much has been made of the situations circling stars Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez; their continual delays of talks and supposedly hefty wage demands. However, there are many more players who are also entering the closing stages of their current deals. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud all have quickly expiring contracts.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

The latter has all but agreed to a new deal, extending his stay in North London beyond the already turbulent and tempestuous five years thus far. In doing so, though, he revealed a very interesting nugget of information. Whilst all the uncertainty of many of the players’ futures is ongoing, it is Arsene Wenger who perhaps brings the most ambivalence. Amid all the ambiguity, Giroud stated that he and his teammates are hoping that Wenger will sign a new contract beyond his current deal which expires this summer:

"“We hope that the boss will sign a new contract…Because we all want to keep going with this squad. It [would] be nice news for the team and the club. From my side, obviously it’s a good thing because I feel very good at Arsenal. I really want to carry on to win the league, and to always improve myself.”"

The ‘Wenger Out’ brigade would have you believe that the old man has lost his touch, no longer excels in the tactical nuances of the game, is still hesitant to invest, restricting the team of any significant progress and has clouded the perspective regarding much of his recent struggles thanks to his early success in North London.

However, such criticisms of Wenger do not hold. Two FA Cup victories, clear progress in the assembling of a squad, culminating in the addition of talents like Ozil and Sanchez, and now three in the past four seasons in which the Premier League is not a distant dream but a realistic proposition entering the new year prove as such.

With the players still strongly behind his management, Wenger is still an integral part – a positively integral part – to the Arsenal machine. Seeing him leave at the end of the year would be a devastating blow for this club. The future, the best future, is in fact, from the past and it lies with Wenger.
