Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is reportedly available for £61 million. That would be a bargain well worth Arsenal pursuing.

The transfer window is a time to dream. The cynical side of me is always dismissive of any report or rumour that I read, especially when Arsenal are concerned. However, the equally hopelessly optimistic side of me lets my mind wander and my imagination rule.

I have dreamed of seeing Juan Mata pulling the proverbial strings. I have hoped to N’Golo Kante scamper around the park with boundless energy and destructive success. I have fantasised over Mesut Ozil moving to North London with his genius German mind creatively and beautifully knitting together a free-flowing, dynamic, ruthless attack.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

None of those came true. Oh! Wait. The signing of Ozil put my cynicism dead to rights. It was only supported a year later with the addition of Alexis Sanchez. Enhanced by the successful move for Petr Cech and confirmed with the near £100 million splashed this last summer. Arsene Wenger is spending money. Perhaps not at the same level as Manchester City or Chelsea, but he is spending nonetheless. It is enough for me to believe that my hopeless dreams might, just might, become a reality.

The latest name that I have begun to dream about is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The love affair began a year ago. Signed from Saint-Ettiene, the now Borussia Dortmund star has established himself as one of the very best strikers in the world. And now, reports state that a bid of £61 million may well be enough to secure his services. That is a bargain well worth pursuing.

The Gabon international is amid his fourth season with the German club. In his first, he scored 13 league goals in 21 league starts. The year later, 16 in 31 starts, then 25 in 28 and this season; 16 in 15. That is a steadily, very impressive improvement.

Much is known regarding Aubameyang’s scintillating pace, his threat in behind and is very intelligent movement, often looking to avoid the ball and find space late in attacking moves. He is an excellent player with the statistics to back it up. Moreover, in a team as creatively successful as Arsenal, Aubameyang would score buckets loads of goals.

Now 27, he still has numerous years at his prime and is still honing his game as his year-on-year improvements show. For £61 million? While that may seem a hefty fee, it is an absolute bargain. The likelihood of any move going through is extremely low but a man’s about to dream, right?
