Sergio Aguero could well be available to buy this summer. For Arsenal, he is a wholly unrealistic target but would become the unexpected saviour.

As Arsenal’s season falters in the latter stages once more, after devastating losses to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, which all but ended their faint hopes in both the Premier League and Champions League, the focus of the club now shifts towards the future and the change that must be enacted to find success.

The future of Arsene Wenger has been a topic of heavy discussion. With his contract expiring at the end of the season and growing criticism from the media, fanbase and now even former players, many feel that the time has come for Wenger to end his 21-year reign in North London.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Other debates have centred on who the Gunners should pursue to bolster their squad in the hopes of ending a 13-year title drought and eternal Champions League drought. One player who has surfaced as a possible recruit is Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero. Working as a pundit for radio station Talksport, when asked about the possibility of the Argentine moving to the Emirates, Ray Parlour was positive about the deal, though tempered expectations with doubts over the realistic chances of a deal ever being completed, stating:

"“That would be good. That would be a nice signing, but £300,000-a-week though so I’m not too sure! Arsenal would be a much better team with Aguero in it. Why would Man City want to sell him? They are trying to rule the Champions League over the next few years.”"

There is no doubt that Aguero would be a phenomenal signing. He is a proven goalscorer in the Premier League, is sharp in his movement, coming alive in the box, and boasts the intelligence and the awareness to excel in Wenger’s possession-based approach which requires his centre-forward to link up the tight, intricate passing of the midfield.

Aguero is a player of the quality capable of handling such responsibilities. He would, even if Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil depart, bring an added ruthlessness to the attacking play of Arsenal, lethal in front of goal, efficient with his chances and exquisite in engineering space.

However, in the same was as Parlour does, I must, unfortunately, pour water on any move. City, if they do sell thanks to the emergence of Gabriel Jesus, would not sell to a direct rival, and even if they would, Arsenal would not be the ones to stump up the cash. Aguero would be a saviour for the Gunners, but it would be wholly unexpected and is thoroughly unrealistic.
