A major overhaul is likely for The Gunners and Gylfi Sigurdsson could be a brilliant addition to a transitioning Arsenal side.

At this point, it looks as though both Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil will be plying their trade away from Arsenal next season. Replacing players of their caliber will be incredibly difficult.

Plenty of names have already been linked with moves to North London – Lorenzo Insigne, Isco, Ross Barkley – but I’m going to throw another name into the hat.

Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Swansea City are in the midst of an incredibly nerve-racking relegation battle. However, it is clear for all to see that The Swans are not worthy of the Icelandic play-maker. Whether Paul Clement’s side are relegated or not, Arsenal should make Sigurdsson a transfer priority.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Despite the fact that he will be 28 years old in September, the Iceland international has proven over the last few years that he is an elite midfielder. One that could ease the pain of a Mesut Ozil departure.

Comparing the stats of both Mesut Ozil and Gylfi Sigurdsson was very interesting. Whilst the stats would suggest that Ozil is the superior playmaker, they also indicate that Sigurdsson is the more complete player.

In recent years, the Gunners have consistently lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation. They have recently dabbled with the 4-3-3, which I believe has a lot of promise. Granit Xhaka has been deployed as the defensive midfielder, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has slotted in alongside and has been a revelation. Moving forward, if Arsenal were to continue playing in the 4-3-3, those two would likely stay put.

Aaron Ramsey is a controversial figure and has been for a while. His amazing 2013-14 season lives in the memory but he has not come close to replicating that form since. At present, he would be the one to make way for Sigurdsson. I would love for Ramsey to re-discover that form, but the truth of the matter is that in recent years he has been off the pace.

A midfield three of Granit Xhaka, Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, and Gylfi Sigurdsson is an enticing prospect. Gylfi and The Ox would be up-and-down all game. Chamberlain’s pace, physicality, and dribbling combined with Sigurdsson’s passing, set pieces and long-shots already has me on the edge of my seat. I cannot remember the last time Arsenal had a legitimate set-piece specialist.

While he may not have the youth of Ross Barkley or the flashiness of Isco, Sigurdsson is a proven Premier League asset. To me, he is Tomas Rosicky minus the injuries. His technical ability is outstanding, his defensive effort inspiring. Sigurdsson recently said that it would be “a dream” for him to play for a big club and with the futures of Ozil, Sanchez, Wilshere, and Oxlade-Chamberlain uncertain, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Arsenal Football Club could be a perfect match.
