Arsenal are the top dogs of London. History proves it and nothing is going to change that, at least not anytime soon. And Arsene Wenger is keenly aware of that.

For twenty straight years, Arsenal has finished above Tottenham. Sometimes it has been pretty close, sometimes it has been incredibly lopsided. Now, finally, in the year 2017, 21 years after the Gunners began their monumental streak of dominance, we may finish beneath the Spurs.

Which clear means, without a shred of a doubt, that there is a shifting in power, undoing the very fabric of footballing in London, right?

Absolutely not. Take it away, Arsene Wenger:

“You cannot say that the weight of one year has the weight of 20,” he said, as quoted by the Irish Times.

Seriously, it just shows how much of an impact Arsenal under Wenger has had on the league and on near rivals. You’ve got Jose Mourinho taking every opportunity to say what Wenger has and has not done and now you have Spuds fans, as well as pundits, that say the power is shifting. After 20 years of wholesale dominance, one year does not simply claim the power.

Leave it to Wenger to stuff it back in the Spuds’ faces in one sentence.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

The Spuds are notorious for choking late, especially when it comes to the Gunners. Think last year. It was a two-horse race between them and Leicester City and they came in third (still one of my favorite quotes ever). A team that does the mightiest of choke jobs does not get to ‘claim the power’ the following year.

Mauricio Pochetino has been pretty outspoken about it too, saying that his club have bigger concerns than finishing above Arsenal.

That might well be. But how about you actually finish above this team you aren’t concerned about before you claim that? That’s like a caterpillar saying “I think it’s time to fly.” Why don’t you spin your little cocoon and become a butterfly before you go thinking that far ahead of things?

Wenger really has become something of an institution. The way he weighs on the minds of rivals and nemesis’s is just amazing. Say what you want about the man, but he is an absolute legend.

He set the bar so high when he first came to the Gunners that even sustained and reliable qualification for the Champions League wasn’t enough going forward, and that’s quite an accomplishment when you look at all the other clubs that have come and gone (Liverpool, Tottenham).
