Arsenal, just a day after winning the FA Cup, are being linked with a £85 million move for Andrea Belotti, proving that the transfer world has indeed gone mad.

With the FA Cup final win on Saturday, the end of the season has come and the summer transfer window is upon us. As a result, prepare yourself for wild hopes and dreams scuppered by economic principles and sensible thinking. Prepare yourself for fantasy teams and dream teams sweeping the nation regarding who each club could sign. Prepare yourself for speculation gone mad, reports and rumours suggesting more ridicule than reality. That lat point is especially true for Arsenal.

Thanks to the way that the club is run, rarely is it the case that Arsenal do not have money to spend in the transfer window. Although they have been hesitant at times to spend that money, it is nonetheless there, and it leads to wild suggestions and reporting.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

The latest rumour to catch my eye centres on the future of Andrea Belotti. The Torino forward was linked with a possible move to North London last summer and is touted as one of the hottest strikers on the continent entering the window. But what was especially noticeable about the report was the price tag: £85 million.

Now, I am not here to question the validity of Mike McGrath’s reporting for the Sun, but does there not come a point where common sense enters the fray? I mean, come on!! The Gunners spending £85 million on any player is as likely as Spurs winning the league, or Danny Welbeck finishing a one-on-one, or Jose Mourinho playing attacking football, or a Sun report being accurate.

As a part of writing for this blog, I will delve into the many transfer rumours that engulf this club, purely out of a duty to investigate them, to analyse how the incoming player would fit into the side, to scrutinise the rumoured addition, just on the off chance that do indeed sign for the club – it happens every now and then, although unlikely.

However, that does not mean that I am willing to believe reports that seem to lack little to any founding in the truth, or at least the remotely plausible, including the impending £85 million move for Belotti.

The transfer world has gone utterly mad, salivating over fantasy scenarios, making up stories simply to feed the imaginations of hopeless fans, pondering how far the boundaries of fathomable can be pushed before they break. It has gone mad, and this is a clear example of how.
