Unai Emery is leaving no stone unturned in his new digs at Arsenal. Does that mean that Joel Campbell could be called upon as well?

Arsenal’s new boss Unai Emery has spoken at length about the positive crop of players that his new club already have. He is supposedly going to mine into those players first and foremost, before reaching out to external sources.

Lucas Perez is one name that is being tossed about as someone of interest. Shunned by Arsene Wenger for no apparent reason, Emery knows Lucas well and is prepared to offer him another chance at life in North London.

I love it. Leave no player untapped. How will we ever know what these guys are capable of if we don’t use them?

But for as much as I love Lucas being given another chance, I have to be difficult and ask about Joel Campbell. The Costa Rican is another that has been inexplicably shunned by Wenger and tossed about Europe, while never fully being let go.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Campbell is a true winger, something the Gunners need. He is speedy, plays on the touchlines and is quite literally unpredictable. Which can be good and bad. But for an attack that often goes stale, it’s certainly a nice tool to have.

Campbell isn’t going to win the Premier League for the Gunners, but if you can extend to him the chance to actually make it at Arsenal, then you may well have found another solution already buried on the books. Campbell had one brief half season to prove himself and I still hold to my belief that he did all he could to impress. He proved more than capable and, if nothing else, is a great resource to have coming off the bench.

The problem with this theory, though, is that he is supposedly out of contract this summer. Bringing back someone like Lucas, who is still on the books at the club and, as such, free, is a no-lose situation.

Extending Campbell, unless Emery massively believes in him, is going to cost money. That said, the allure of Arsenal has always appealed to Campbell, and as Lucas is soon to find out, a new boss means new favorites.

Campbell is a resource worth investing in, as he plays a position we need and he believes in the Arsenal way. So what’s the harm in giving him another chance, if that is the theme of the day?
