Mertesacker and Koscielny vs Terry and Cahill

Two of the most storied center back pairings in the world of football. Mertesacker and Koscielny used to be the best, statistically, as they went near forty games without losing at home. That in and of itself is pretty impressive.

However, it is now two years later and Mertesacker is on the decline. Koscielny is still holding strong and Paulista figures to be his partner soon, but for now Arsenal stay with the German and the Frenchie. It is still an effective combo, however, as Koscielny has developed as one of the best, most aggressive defenders in football. He reads play incredibly well and averages around three interception per game.

The Chelsea duo is a much different kind of defending pair, as neither one excels in aggressive play stopping. They deal with cleaning up any messes that arrive at their doorstep. While John Terry is now 34 years old, he is still incredibly effective.

Ranking the defenders individually, it has to go Koscielny, Cahill, Terry and then Mertesacker.

Verdict: Unfortunately, Chelsea still has the upper hand here and they will as long as Terry and Cahill are a team.
