Which is why his performance against Liverpool was extra surprising.
The entire game, Chambers looked extremely uncertain on the ball, almost nervous, as he gave it away time and time again to Liverpool players. In addition, he seemed to get bossed off the ball by Benteke throughout the game and did not look like he was fully able to mark quicker players like Coutinho and Firmino.
Chambers’s first appearance of the Premier League season was not one that the young Englishman will want to remember. This makes one wonder whether it’s something to simply attribute to lack of playing time in the last few months.
Ever since Hector Bellerin cemented his spot as the first-choice right back, Chambers has not seen a lot of the pitch. So did his poor performance simply occur because he was thrust too quickly into a high-pressure match against a good team?
Whatever the answer is, the game raises serious questions about Chambers’s ability as a consistent first team player.
