Arsenal: 20 Greatest Goals Of Last 20 Years
4. Dennis Bergkamp vs. Newcastle March 2, 2002
Skill: 5- Another ridiculous goal from Arsenal’s Dutch legend. This goal just oozes with class from start to finish. Vieira’s tackle to win the ball back deep in his own half and Pires’ incisive ball into the Newcastle penalty area are just wonders to behold. The build up play, however, pales in comparison to the deftness of the finish. Once again we see Bergkamp’s uncanny ability to sidestep defenders with the utmost skill and creativity. The Dutchman’s close control is scintillating, but it’s his little push off that truly seals this as of the best all around goals in Arsenal history.
Opponent: 3- Although Newcastle may be battling relegation in the today’ Premier League, the Magpies weren’t always so hilariously inept. During the 2001-02 season, Newcastle were serious contenders and found themselves right in the heat of the title hunt. Newcastle ultimately finished fourth, proving that this classy performance and clean sheet against them was truly an impressive victory for the Gunners at the time.
Significance: 5- This goal effectively dealt the knock out blow to Newcastle’s title hopes and Arsenal went on to claim the double in this season. This may not have clinched the title but it certainly stands out as one of the most exciting goals of a very exciting season.
