4. Ryan Shawcross

Much of that hostile environment has been created by Ryan Shawcross. He is an unpopular figure among Arsenal circles, primarily because of the tackle that broke Aaron Ramsey’s leg all those years ago.

However, whie he may not be liked, it must be admitted that he is an excellent defender. Strong and dominant in the air, he marshalls his troops with great understanding of the team’s set-up. He is quick enough to match runs into the channels and out wide, he is a good tackler and is solid on the ball.

If Arsenal are to beat Stoke on Saturday, as they must do to give themselves a chance of hauling their way back into the top four by the end of the season, then outmanouevring and overcoming Shawcross will be vital.
