Arsenal: 5 squad depth questions opened by Rob Holding
1. Wingbacks are another area of concern
If you thought Arsenal’s centerback situation was bad, then take a look at their wingback set up. Hector Bellerin, at rightback, has Stephan Lichtsteiner and Carl Jenkinson as backup. One can’t give you 40+ appearances a season due to his age and the other is a forgotten man that both Wenger and Emery have tried (and failed thus far) to sell off.

And there are only two senior leftbacks in the team – Monreal and Sead Kolasinac – one of whom is always injured (they seem to take turns at being injured).
An injury to Bellerin or Kolasinac would mean that Arsenal’s attacking threat is considerably lost, not considering the speed (Bellerin) and brute physicality (Kolasinac) these guys bring to the table.
A few youngsters did make their senior debuts against Vorskla. But when you have as many dangerous wingers as the Premier League has, these back-up options are just not good enough.
Conclusion
Most fans, yours truly included, feel that Emery’s true squad will only take shape over the next two transfer windows (three in total since Emery became the gaffer). The issues, however, are clear and present.
Dwindling numbers at centerback, fragility at wingbacks and no real striking option past Lacazette and Aubameyang are all problems that could derail a promising season. Here’s to hoping some of these issues would be fixed in the coming transfer window.
