19. Mesut Ozil

Speaking of wishing that we didn’t have to rank a player so low, see Exhibit B. The fact that Mesut Ozil has ranked in as our 19th best player out of 22 is a testament to two things: 1. How lofty his expectations are, and justifiably so, 2. How much of a failure this season ended up being for him. Likely the final nail in his Arsenal coffin, assuming we can get a good price for him…

More from Pain in the Arsenal

…Or any price.

Ozil did not jive with Unai Emery, and whatever glimpses we saw of positivity were quickly undone by more failures. He just doesn’t have what it takes to be relied upon in the current Arsenal set-up. He’s a luxury player that needs solidity around him and we just can’t afford that right now. Nor can we afford his ridiculous wages.

Ozil’s stat line is paltry and by far the worst of his career. His chances created is the worst it’s ever been, and less than half what it was in his breakout 2015/16 season, and that’s always been the one thing he did well, even against the grain of other failures.

It’s also become quite obvious that he just can’t perform away from home. For whatever reason(s), it just doesn’t work. And, that being the case, it should be time to say goodbye. I don’t know who is going to want to take on his wages, but hopefully someone will.

Andy (18), Josh (20)

No. 18 incoming.
