Arsenal: 5 players who exceeded expectations in 2019/20
3. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was already largely considered one of the greatest centre-forwards of his generation. He has been amazingly prolific throughout his career, and the numbers illustrate a man who has been one of the world’s greatest goalscorers over the past decade.

However, when the Gabonese centre-forward arrived at Arsenal a little over two years ago, there were suggestions that his character might be problematic. He buys flashy cars, spends lavishly on jewellery, and is not averse to a late night, partying away until silly hours in the morning for a professional footballer. And yet, throughout his time at the club, none of these concerns have ever come to light, especially this season.
Aubameyang was named club captain in Granit Xhaka’s absence. He has led with grace, character, passion, determination, and a willingness to do whatever is necessary for the team. A natural goalscorer, he has performed admirably in a wide role, undertaking his defensive responsibility dutifully, happy to concede the centre-forward position to others in the team, even when he outperforms them.
And through all of this, his numbers have remained outstanding. 17 Premier League goals in 26 games. Only Jamie Vardy has more. 20 goals in 2,711 minutes in all competitions. The club’s top goalscorer and in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot for the second season in succession. But everyone knew Aubameyang was a prolific goalscorer. What they didn’t know was his work ethic is superb, he is a team-first individual, and he has developed into quite the leader.
