Arsenal have no time to wallow in their Premier League misery as they travel to St James’ Park on Monday to face Eddie Howe’s Newcastle. Here is the match preview.

Everything that could possibly have gone wrong against Tottenham did indeed go wrong.

Senior figures like Cedric Soares and Rob Holding crumbled – the latter getting himself sent off – and Gabriel went down injured with the score at an already despairing 3-0.

Losing to them up the road always cuts deep. This one came with additional stab wounds.

The defeat means that Arsenal’s lead over Tottenham is narrowed to a single point, although by the time they kick-off on Tyneside they could well be trailing Antonio Conte’s men. Spurs host Burnley on Sunday in a game they are largely expected to win.

What Arsenal must do is what they have aimed to do in every game this season: win. No fixture have they entered into without the objective of leaving with all three points, and anything less than six from their remaining two outings against Newcastle and Everton is sure to see them play Europa League football next season.

But despite what the table might say, this is no easy game.

Eddie Howe has done a tremendous job since taking over at the Magpies. Yes, he had cash to splash in the January window, but there was only one marquee name brought in. He’s stabalised them defensively, made St James’ Park a formidable place to come, and squeezed the best out of players who were failing tremendously under Steve Bruce.

All that can be done for Arsenal is to win the game.

Want some omens? The Gunners have won 17 and lost just one of their last 18 Premier League games against Newcastle, while they have lost just one of the last 13 at St James’ Park – winning seven of the last eight.

Let’s hope that continues, because this is the biggest game of the season for this team. The nerves have already kicked in.

Arsenal Team News vs Newcastle – Gabriel and Benjamin White Concerns

It all unraveled dreadfully for Arsenal on Thursday. There are 3-0 defeats, and then there are those 3-0 defeats.

One player who is certain to miss out on Monday is Rob Holding. The central defender was hot-headed from the first whistle and the aggression he showed on Son crossed the line under the referee’s eye. His two yellow cards and a subsequent sending off will see him suspended for this game.

How well timed, then, that Gabriel could no longer continue having suffered an apparent muscular injury on the back of his thigh. It looks like being a hamstring problem and, given how he left the field of play, it would be a miracle if he was to play again this season.

Completing the defensive crisis is Benjamin White. Arteta made the right call not to bring him on after Holding’s booking, with the second goal coming moments later and seeming to end the game as a contest, although he did get up initially to come on.

Having not trained it was clear that he wasn’t entirely ready, but additional rest before Monday should see him back fit in time.

As for the hosts they welcomed backed long-term absentees Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson in their most recent outing and the pair could make starts in this one, along with Fabian Schar.

Ryan Fraser, Jamal Lewis, Isaac Hayden and Joe Willock remain absent for Howe’s side.

Newcastle vs Arsenal Score Prediction

Sadly, this feels like the end of the road for Arsenal. As much as everyone needs to support the team (we will) and believe that Champions League is still well within grasp, there is a sinking feeling that can’t be shaken.

Everything seems too be favouring the hosts.

From the Gunners’ point of view the idea of a full-back pairing of Cedric and Nuno Tavares is terrifying. Both awfully prone to mistakes, the only hope is that they somehow cancel each other out and therefore have solid games. Ha.

We can hope.

The whole occasion, under the lights, with Tottenham having surely beaten Burnley the day before, it being Newcastle’s final home game and the immense pressure being placed on these players just spells disaster.

Arsenal have a fantastic record at St James’ Park, but this is a different Newcastle team, and an injury ravaged and possibly psychologically damaged Arsenal side.

Fingers crossed this is wrong.

Score Prediction: Newcastle 2-0 Arsenal
