Arsenal won the Markus Liebherr Memorial Cup tonight following a 1-0 win over Anderlecht and a 1-1 draw with Premier League new boys Southampton. Arsenal and the Saints then proceeded to a penalty shootout, even though the Gunners had won the tournament. Arsenal lost 5-4 on penalties, but with the cup already secured, Southampton had the shootout in hope that they could secure some pride from the evening.

Anderlecht won the first match of the tournament 1-0, beating their hosts. The next game was Arsenal vs Anderlecht, where the Gunners won 1-0 against the Belgian champions thanks to Henri Lansbury’s goal in the 34th minute. That was enough for the Gunners to win their first game, as each game was 45 minutes long.

In the second game, Arsenal fell behind to a Jay Rodriguez header, but a wonderful goal by Gervinho a few minutes later meant that the Gunners won the tournament.

The penalty shootout was just for fun to cap off a good day for all fans on the South Coast. In the end Southampton won the shootout, Arsenal brought home the trophy and Anderlecht won a game too. A good day for all.

I couldn’t get a stream for the game as Arsenal Player wasn’t showing this game for some reason and it wasn’t on the television either. So I had to make do with twitter updates from people at the ground. I have posted the goals up and the trophy presentation into the hub if anybody is interested.

Finally, I want to say a huge thank you to Southampton Football Club for putting on this tournament and I wish you the best of luck next season.
