Wenger confirms Vermaelen as new captain, Arteta vice-captain and Song may leave.

Arsene Wenger has appointed Thomas Vermaelen as the new Arsenal captain following Robin Van Persie’s departure from the club. As Vermaelen was the vice-captain last season, Mikel Arteta has been given vice-captaincy for the new campaign. The Spaniard joined the club from Everton last summer and had an impressive first season at the club.  I recall him wearing the armband against Leeds in the FA Cup on the night of Thierry Henry’s return.

"“The new captain is Vermaelen and [the vice-captain is] Mikel Arteta,”“We have many potential captains in this team.” – Arsene Wenger on the captaincy at Arsenal."

Let’s just hope that he doesn’t have to use these ‘potential’ captains for quite some time, or only in the case of injury / suspension.

Wenger also confirmed that Alex Song could possibly leave the club this summer too. Wenger was asked about the possibility at his pre-game press conference as well as the possibility of new signings coming in, to which he replied: “both can happen”. So there you have it. Alex Song could possibly be the next one out the door at the Emirates and Arsenal could be bringing in players before the end of the transfer window, as we would hope.
