Arsenal’s match against Besiktas was a largely disappointing affair with no team really showing any reason for fans to get too excited. However there was one thing that would give Arsenal fan’s a cause for hope: Calum Chambers.

In a boring match there was one bight spark for Arsenal fans to look forward to

They young defender passed another test of his maturity in his European debut, despite the odd lapse of concentration. Considering some of the distinctly average defenders that have plied their trade in the Premier League for years, 19 year old Calum Chambers is well ahead on his development curve and seems a steal at £16m.

There was a momentary lapse of judgement when he gave the ball away too easily to Demba Ba, but the ex Chelsea star lacked the finishing skills that will be forever etched on Liverpool fan’s memories of last season.

In fact Ba also produced the games only real moment of magic, when his strike from half-way struck the bar after only a couple of seconds of the match starting. Usually shots from this distance fly over the bar by some distance but this had the Arsenal keeper fighting to get his fingertips to the speculative effort.

  • Last years hero Aaron Ramsey also saw red in the match in a decision that Arsenal boss Wenger branded unbelievable, “Neither the first nor the second yellow card was deserved.” Jack Wilshere also looked much better and will hopefully be playing for most of the season without an injury to hold him back.

Arsenal will now know any victory is enough to take them through to the Champions League proper and will be very confident that they can get that, especially seeing as Beskitas as notoriously poor travellers. Without their home support behind them they find it very difficult to score results against big teams. Let’s take their 8-0 loss to Liverpool back in 2007 as proof of that…
