This Arsenal Rainbow Laces Ad Should Get You Laughing

When athletes take to the podium to answer the media’s questions, you never really get a sense of any personality or character, it’s the same scripted answers over and over again.

“We just have to take it one game at a time.”

“We learned a lot from the game.”

“Yes, he played really well.”

It’s very rare that someone goes against the grain and completely shocks you with an answer.

Well, I for one really enjoy an athlete with personality. It’s why I’m a huge fan of Wojciech Szczesny – the guy is funny. I’ve mentioned his former special on the Arsenal website where he challenged team mates to spontaneous competitions, including ping-pong with frying pans. That kind of stuff makes me so much more of a fan. Why? Because it reminds me that athletes are human too, and they actually have personalities. (Szczesny’s David Ospina comments are still up for debate, but that’s a different story)

As such, I’m always welcoming of anything that shows athletes being funny, and this #RainbowLaces ad that Arsenal put out had me bordering on hysterics. Take a look:

Not only is it a good cause but it’s hilarious too, which conveniently makes the cause even better.

By the time Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain said that he can’t change that he looks like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, I had accepted that I had to watch the video thirty-two more times. I had to look up Theo Walcott’s reference to Lewis Hamilton, but I was sure glad I did.

It’s always stressful being an Arsenal fan. With Wenger at the helm and the prof just never making enough signings to please the world, we deserve a good laugh every now and then. So to whoever devised this commercial, thank you!
