Arsenal Already Ruing Chuba Akpom Loan with Danny Welbeck Injury

Just when I thought Arsenal’s medical staff was immaculate and completely immune to setbacks, news has arrived that Danny Welbeck is out until Christmas. Don’t get me wrong, I am in no way blaming the Arsenal medical staff, it is just a bit disheartening to continually see a guy with so much to play for this year having his return delayed. To make matters worse, it is at striker.

That is right, Danny Welbeck’s knee cartilage did not react the way the medical staff was hoping and he therefore requires surgery, according to BBC Sport.

This fiasco makes the fact that Arsene Wenger was unable to secure another striker in the transfer window even more painful. Arsenal finds themselves in the same situation they did when Olivier Giroud was our only legitimate striker option. With an eye for competing in all four competitions, something has to change for Arsenal. Giroud cannot play every single game and Theo Walcott may be good against lesser opponents but in crucial Champions’ League match ups and unfavorable draws in the League Cup and FA Cup, we need a true striker.

Danny Welbeck was the closest thing we had to a true striker behind Olivier Giroud. He may have failed in the goal-scoring side of things, but he still creates space, gets in behind the defense and provides and aerial presence for Arsenal. Those are all valuable assets and I again hold to the notion that any striker put in the center of this attack will have plenty of chances to score goals.

Arsenal need a striker and seeing as how the transfer window is shut until January, something has to be done. Kieran Gibbs could find some time, seeing as how he used to be a striker (that’s a joke). We could play Alexis up front but again, he cannot play every game.

The only real option that we have is Joel Campbell seeing as how Chuba Akpom cannot be recalled due to the rules of a season long loan.

Wenger had mentioned earlier in the season that Chuba Akpom would not be sent out on loan. He loaned him out anyway. The loan may have been with the understanding that Danny Welbeck’s injury would not be serious. It appeared to only be a bone bruise and the fact that it was more than that baffled even Arsene Wenger.

To make matters even more salty, Hull manager Steve Bruce cannot stop singing the praises of Chuba Akpom. He has called him an outstanding talent and pegged every attribute that makes him so (via 90min).

All we can do now is wait it out until Christmas.
