Arsenal are still tied to Leicester City’s N’Golo Kante, despite Granit Xhaka’s recent arrival. As such, all things are hints, except Kante’s latest words.

Arsenal’s continued link to N’Golo Kante is promising, but it’s important not to get our hopes up. While Kante and Xhaka would completely revolutionize Arsenal’s midfield, it remains a very unlikely scenario.

Kante is a strong defensive midfielder and a tremendous athlete, but he doesn’t contribute much to the offense, plus he is currently with Leicester and, until we hear otherwise, that Premier League winning side is sticking together.

The crazy thing about all of this is that Kante is only supposed to cost £20m. That’s a very low price for what he showed us this year and all things considered, if that’s all it’s going to cost, then he is going to move somewhere this summer. Leicester’s bonus isn’t going to be able to lock down everyone and Kante’s superb season is attracting a lot of suitors.

Namely, Arsenal.

Again, I am not convinced that Arsenal is still in pursuit because of the Xhaka signing, but let’s assume that Arsenal is still in on the quiet Frenchman. What he recently said is nothing like what we would consider a ‘firm denial.’

“I am happy at Leicester. I do not pay too much attention to everything that is said. For now, I am in Leicester and I focus on the Euros.”

More from Pain in the Arsenal

That’s what we call a ‘leave me alone’ deflection. We are in one of those summers where the Euros is going to interfere with all transfer plans relating to European players that aren’t named Granit Xhaka. There is nothing more to his statements than that.

Now that I have done my best to restore hope, I have to be the party-pooper. Kante coming to Arsenal would be a massive shock. I am doing my best to put on my Wenger-vision goggles and to me, the defensive midfield is filled. Between Coquelin, Elneny and Xhaka, Arsenal have control and defense galore. If there are going to be any more midfield signings, it would be an offensive signing. Someone who can bolster the attack, probably on the flanks.

Another defensive midfielder plummeted on Arsenal’s shopping list. It sits behind a central defender, a striker, wide attackers and more. Kante cannot fit a role that Arsenal needs.

Unless they plan on parting with Coquelin, which given the whole loyalty aspect, they don’t, then Arsenal and Kante will not be uniting this year. And his recent statements don’t change that (see what I did there?).
