Manchester United have made a statement of intent with the signing of Paul Pogba. Arsenal now need to do the same or risk yet another underwhelming season.

One aspect of big name transfer additions, alongside the quality and improvement that they bring on the pitch, is the statement of intent that they make. In the past Arsenal have had such signings and have enjoyed the benefits of such additions, and they are need of a similar statement once again.

Before Arsene Wenger even came to North London, Arsenal bought Dennis Bergkamp, a player of world class quality. Not only did Bergkamp grow into a key member of the Gunners’ greatest team in history, he paved the way for many great players to follow during the late ’90s, early ’00s era.

Arsenal need that player again. They need their Paul Pogba.

While based on pure quality, Pogba is not worth anywhere near the £89 million that Manchester United shelled out to bring the prodigal son home. However, and Jose Mourinho, the master of the big name signing, knows all to well the off-field impact that Pogba has.

Pogba embodies a building United team, a club in a position to make a run at the title, an improving team of genuine quality. He brings with him an air of expectation and an aura of authority that success is on its way.

Contrast such positive feeling surrounding Manchester United to the stagnating and underwhelming atmosphere that shrouds the Emirates, with an expectancy of underachievement. Such a signing is becoming a necessity, but who is out there.

There were reports on Wednesday that Arsenal had made a bid for Riyad Mahrez. These, however, have been rebutted rather quickly and Arsene Wenger is yet to make a significant addition to his squad since Alexis Sanchez two years ago. One rumoured possibility is Antoine Griezmann, though that seems more like a pipe dream than a reality, while Shkodran Mustafi may be the most likely route that the Gunners take.

Will any of these deals happen? I highly doubt it, but that does not make them any less necessary. Arsenal are in need of a breath of fresh air, a statement of intent. They need their Paul Pogba, but I simply don’t think it’s going to happen.
