Arsenal has some nice young prospects nearing a point where they demand to be noticed, so to see one such prospect miss this crucial period is all too normal.

Arsenal youngster Stephy Mavididi broke down in tears today after learning that he had torn a hamstring and would miss 14-16 weeks. The 18 year old striker had just arrived at Charlton Athletic and had been praised immensely by the Charlton manager the previous day.

“Stephy’s an interesting one. Since he has come in everyone is talking about him, he was probably the shining light against Rochdale and Oxford,” Charlton boss Karl Robinson said via the Evening Standard.

He continued: “A real good kid, a real honest kid, a kid who wants to learn. Fundamentally he has the physical aspects to be successful. He’s certainly got a bright future.”

Robinson went on to note that Mavididi had all that was needed to be a success at the highest level. This came just after he had made a box-to-box run that successfully eviscerated the Rochdale defense.

And one day later, he is out for the season.

This is just so Arsenal. They have so much promise in so many solid young players and somehow this always manages to happen. Obviously Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby are the poster children of it, but there are plenty of others.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

The long-term striker options for Arsenal seemed so positive not that long ago. Chuba Akpom, Stephy Mavididi and Donyell Malen all looked to have a bright future at the North London club and it would spare us from having to play the painful transfer game at such a crucial position.

Akpom has since disappeared because of a massive injury which he has only just recovered from and now Mavididi is missing out on a loan that could well have slingshot him into the first team come next year.

It’s not the end of the world, but at 18 years old, Mavididi was truly enjoying his football and to have this happen at such a time is such an unnecessary reminder. How he handles his recovery is all that matters now.

As we have seen at Arsenal before, sometimes these injuries help guys return better than ever, but that is a mental accomplishment that is not easy to make. However, Mavididi does have that workaholic mentality that should help him be another such case.

All we can do is hope that he can get right back on track in the summer. We wish Stephy a speedy and comprehensive recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the pitch.
