Arsenal is in a dire situation with Alexis Sanchez, and the Chilean is setting himself up to overtake Robin van Persie in the worst way possible.

Arsenal has a tough summer coming up in regards to Alexis Sanchez. With just a year left on his contract, it’s a matter of lock him in for more years or sell him. Because if neither happens, then you risk him leaving on a free next summer.

Which could mean him going to Chelsea. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

There has been a sort of murmured acceptance that if Alexis Sanchez wants to leave, we couldn’t entirely blame him. It’s clear that his mentality is fiercer than the rest of the Gunners combined, so going to a team like Juventus, Atletico Madrid or PSG would make sense. Go somewhere where the club invests in similar players. Stop suffering.

But then Chelsea entered into the conversation via the Chilean’s own veiled words.

“I’d like to stay in the city but with a team that is winning things, that has a winning mentality,” he said, via SkySports.

That is pretty sickening to think about because it’s a clear jab at the Gunners and it puts it all on the table. If they don’t win, they will have no excuse for losing him.

You can’t doubt his motivation for leaving. But you can strongly doubt his preferred destination.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

It’s just like Robin van Persie. His reasoning for leaving was pretty solid. He disagreed with Wenger’s direction for the club, which involved more rebuilding and cutting the budget. So he left. The big problem came from where he went, obviously.

Same goes with Cesc Fabregas. When he went to Barcelona, it sucked. But we didn’t hate him or hiss at him. Now that he is with Chelsea? Different story.

Alexis Sanchez would be the worst of the bunch. Yet again we have another guy who can be a club legend if he sticks it out. Plus, this may be tough to believe, but there is reason to have faith in the change on the horizon. Wenger is almost done and changes have to be made in order to turn this club around.

Going to Chelsea would be a complete reset. A return to the nightmarish debt days when every player we loved went directly to rivals. We were supposed to be past those days and winning major trophies by now, but that has not been the case.

It’s a pretty ambiguous statement, yet it couldn’t be more straightforward. Maybe the FA Cup has much more of an impact this year than we think. At least we’d be “winning things.”
