The thing about being a follower of Arsenal is you know at some point during your season you’re likely to get hit by the injury bug. On the face of it, that isn’t a big deal because most clubs are hit with it during their seasons at some point. However, the thing that separates Arsenal when it comes to the injury bug is that it often seems we get a rash of injuries in the same position.
This year that position seems to be left back. Firstly, Kieran Gibbs was hurt several weeks ago and will be out for a few months and now, André Santos will be out for a few months following ankle surgery. Which is a shame because with Gibbs being out André Santos had a ready made opportunity to establish himself in the side following his move from Fenerbahçe in August.
This means it looks like Thomas Vermaelen (who had a couple of injury scares himself on Saturday & was substituted for late on) will have a run in the left back spot unless Arsène Wenger decides to go with youngster Ignasi Miquel there. The latter is unlikely but with Wenger you never know and he may try to slip a spot start or two for Miquel in there.
This also means it looks like the central defense partnership in the near future will be that of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.
So, much like the name of the site, the Pain In My Arsenal right now is injuries!
