Burton Named Reserve Team Boss and Head Development Coach
By Tom Humphrey
Terry Burton has been appointed as the new manager of Arsenal’s reserve team, as well as Head Development Coach at the club. Burton is a former youth team player of Arsenal’s and won the FA Youth Cup in 1971. He never quite made it in the game himself, so in 1979 he returned to Arsenal as a youth coach, helping develop the likes of Tony Adams, David Rocastle, Paul Merson, Michael Thomas and Martin Keown. He worked with the first-team with then manager Don Howe in the 1980’s.
Burton moved on to Wimbledon, where he had roles as both a coach and the manager there. Since then he has also had roles with Watford, Cardiff, West Brom and most recently Sheffield Wednesday, where he was assistant manager of the side that recently won promotion to the Championship.
Arsenal have needed somebody to fill the role since Pat Rice left the club due to retirement at the end of the season. Rice was Arsene Wenger’s assistant, but his departure led to Steve Bould becoming Arsene’s new assistant and reserve team manager Neil Banfield also becoming a part of the first-team set up at the club.
Burton will be managing the reserves next season, but his role will also see him involved in the NextGen Series, which is the elite European U-19’s competition. As well as this, he will have a say in coaching strategies across all of Arsenal’s youth development age groups and will be working closely with Gunners legend Liam Brady, who is head of youth development at the club.
Burton said the following after his appointment:
"“I’m delighted and proud to be joining Arsenal as reserves and head development coach. Having started my career at Arsenal as a youth player, and then as a coach, I know the history, class and values of this great football club. I can’t wait to get started in my new role and to meet the players and my new colleagues.I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dave Jones and everyone at Sheffield Wednesday for their support and understanding. Wednesday is a great club and I leave behind many great friends. I wish everyone at Sheffield Wednesday the best of luck for next season.”"
Burton will officially join the club next week, to prepare for pre-season training. Welcome back Terry!
