Arsenal announce squad numbers for 2012/13 season
By Tom Humphrey
Arsenal today released the following squad numbers for the forthcoming campaign. Wojciech Szczesny has switched to the number 1 jersey following Manuel Almunia’s departure from the club. New signing Olivier Giroud has taken the number 12 shirt, something that we confirmed to you the other day on this blog. Francis Coquelin has taken the number 22 shirt, last worn by Gael Clichy, who left Arsenal for Man City in 2011. Kyle Bartley’s promotion to the Arsenal first-team has seen him receive the number 35 shirt.
Interestingly, Lukas Podolski has yet to receive his squad number at the club. I would assume he is holding out for the number 10 shirt that is currently worn by the wantaway skipper Robin Van Persie. Podolski has worn the number 10 for Germany and Cologne in the past, so I would think that Arsenal have told him to wait until Van Persie has been sold by the club (I’m certain he’s going) before he gets the shirt number. It will annoy the fans that want to get the German international on the back of their shirts this summer, as they need official confirmation from the club before they can get the shirt printed.
