Are Arsenal in for another Southampton youngster?
By Tom Humphrey
Arsenal have taken two of Southampton’s highest rated youngsters from the South Coast to London in the last 6 years, with both Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain making the move. Now, according to some British newspapers, Arsenal could be in for another one of their players.
Arsene Wenger is said to be weighing up a move for Luke Shaw, an attacking full back who has risen through the ranks with the Saints and is now in the first-team. Chelsea reportedly bid £4m for his services earlier in the summer and it is believed that Wenger is preparing a bigger offer to tempt the Saints into selling.
The reports claim that Wenger has sent his scouts to watch him on many occasions, including this weekend in a friendly against Ajax. The moves for Oxlade-Chamberlain and Walcott have both seen them break into the England setup and if Shaw did move to the Emirates, he would be hoping to do the same. The moves have yet to win them a trophy though and Shaw would hope that he’d be able to win some trophies at Arsenal if he were to join the club.
One of the differences with this move would be that Southampton are now back in the Premier League and Shaw might fancy his chances of getting in Southampton’s team more than Arsenal’s. Oxlade-Chamberlain joined the club in August 2011, when Southampton were newcomers to the Championship, having just been promoted from League One the year before. Walcott made the move in January 2006, when the Saints were aiming for promotion to the Premier League at the first time of asking, having been relegated the season before.
