Sagna latest player to criticise transfer policy
By Tom Humphrey
Bacary Sagna has become the latest player to question the club’s transfer policy after the sales of Robin Van Persie and Alex Song this summer. The right-back told L’Equipe that he expected Van Persie to go as he had one year left on his deal, but Song was a surprise as he is 24 and had 3 years left on his deal at Arsenal.
He stated that he also asks himself questions, just like the fans that see him on the street do. He went on to say that he watched Manchester City’s title parade on the television back in May, seeing former team-mates Gael Clichy, Samir Nasri and Kolo Toure involved in the celebrations and that made him hungry for success. Sagna is now 29 years old, so the window of opportunity to win things is closing every day. You also have to take into consideration that he is currently injured and has had injuries in the past too, so that won’t help his case.
Finally, when asked whether anyone at Arsenal had talked to him about extending his contract at the club, that expires in the summer of 2014, Sagna said “no, nobody”. If Sagna plays well this season after returning from injury, don’t be surprised if he went. He sounds like a frustrated player that wants to win trophies. We will have to see if he gets them at Arsenal this year. You already know that if a player doesn’t extend his contract in the final year, there is a strong possibility that he will be sold. Theo Walcott is still at the club and into his final year. It is worrying that we’re struggling to keep hold of our star players every year.
