Sagna to make return tonight for under-21s
By Tom Humphrey
Sagna will return to action tonight with the reserves.
Bacary Sagna will make his return to football tonight for Arsenal’s under-21 team a gainst Reading tonight. Sagna has had problems with injuries for the past year or so. Now over a year ago at White Hart Lane, Sagna fractured the fibula in his right leg during a North London Derby. He worked hard to return and did so in January 2012 in an FA Cup tie against Aston Villa.
Unfortunately for Sagna, he fractured his fibula again in May, during Arsenal’s last home game of the season against Norwich. After playing a big part in Arsenal’s return to form towards the end of last season, it was a shame for Sagna to miss the game at West Brom where Arsenal clinched 3rd place and with it, a Champions League spot in 2012/13.
The Frenchman has been out since that day and is on the road to recovery. Just like Jack Wilshere and Emmanuel Frimpong, he will be playing in the under-21’s to get back into football. Arsene Wenger believes he is capable of playing for an hour against Reading’s under-21’s, so this will be good for him to get back in the routine. Just like Wilshere and Frimpong, he will not be rushed back into first-team action.
Carl Jenkinson has been doing a fantastic job of covering for Sagna whilst he was injured and the Frenchman certainly won’t be walking straight back into the line-up. Jenkinson has impressed so much that there is talk that he could be included in an England squad soon. Jenkinson also has the option to represent Finland at international level and did so at both under-19 and under-21 level. He was an England under-17 international though. This still makes him available to represent either England or Finland at senior level.
