Could Joachim Low succeed Arsene Wenger at Arsenal?
By Tom Humphrey
Hello guys,
Just a quick post from me today. Over the last couple of days, there have been suggestions that Joachim Low could succeed Arsene Wenger at the Emirates and that Arsenal are planning ahead for when Wenger’s contract expires in the summer of 2014 if he doesn’t sign another deal between now and then.
Low would obviously want to manage Germany at the World Cup in 2014, but if Arsenal were to have him come in to succeed Wenger, there are certainly worse options out there. He’s done a good job with the German national team and would certainly be worth considering for the club. The timing would be right for both Arsenal and Low if this were to happen.
Wenger has been given a long time to get things right again and Arsenal and Wenger will have to part ways some day. It’d be better to part ways by him running down his contract than to be sacked.
Personally I can’t see Arsenal sacking Wenger, so if he is to leave it’ll be by his contract expiring in my opinion. If Arsenal put an offer on the table for Wenger then I expect him to take it. If they don’t, then Low is certainly a possibility in 2014.
Anyway, I posted a video in the hub of the site with some journalists discussing the possibility. They raise good points about how Arsenal have gone to Germany in recent years in the transfer market and seem more willing to sign from the Bundesliga. Per Mertesacker arrived from Werder Bremen in the summer of 2011, whilst Lukas Podolski came from FC Cologne last summer too. As well as this, Serge Gnabry signed from Stuttgart a couple of years ago and Thomas Eisfeld joined from Borussia Dortmund in January 2012.
If Low joined Arsenal in 2014, he would certainly be familiar with those players at least. Like I say, I expect the board to offer Wenger a further two years or something eventually, but it is good to keep our options open. If Arsenal go trophyless in the 2013/14 season, a change would certainly be worth considering at the very least.
Joachim Low seems as good a candidate as any to possibly replace Arsene Wenger in 2014.
