Vermaelen happy with Gunners

Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen has insisted he is happy at Arsenal, despite rumours that he is going to leave the club in the summer.

The Belgian international lost his place in the team following Arsenal’s North London Derby defeat at White Hart Lane in March and only came in when Per Mertesacker was suspended. Once Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny formed a solid partnership, there was no room for Vermaelen in the team, leading to speculation that he will leave in the summer.

Vermaelen has been quoted as saying:

"“I’m happy at Arsenal. I didn’t play much and that was frustrating, but things can turn around quickly.I was on the bench, but I could just as quickly be playing again. I’m working hard to make that happen. These are things that happen in professional football. Arsenal are a great club where there is a lot of competition.” – Thomas Vermaelen on his future at Arsenal."

With Arsenal being linked to Swansea’s Ashley Williams this summer, a move for the Welshman would surely signal a departure for Vermaelen. Williams won’t come to Arsenal if he’s not going to get a game, so you’d have to assume Vermaelen would drop to 4th choice in that scenario. Of course, Arsenal signing Williams certainly isn’t a done deal and is purely rumours right now, but if it were to happen, Vermaelen might well leave.
