Melgarejo’s agent spices up interest in his client
By Tom Humphrey
The agent of Benfica’s Lorenzo Melgarejo claims that both Arsenal and Fenerbahce are interested in his client’s services this summer. The full-back is believed to cost around £5m, so would certainly be within Arsenal’s budget, although a £5m signing would hardly appease the Arsenal fans demanding that the club spend big in the transfer market.
His agent said the following when asked about his client’s future:
"“Arsenal and Fenerbahce have enquired about Melgarejo. But so far there has been nothing concrete,” – Quotes: Sky Sports"
Personally I can’t see this happening. I think it’s his agent trying to stir up interest in the player. Fenerbahce could have an interest, but I can’t see us having one. From doing a little research into him, he appears to be a left-back really. Arsenal have Kieran Gibbs and also signed Nacho Monreal in the January transfer window, so signing another player in that position wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense.
Add to the above point that Arsenal still have Andre Santos on their wage bill at the left-back position and you have to seriously put this one down as just a rumour. Maybe he will join one day, but I certainly can’t see it happening this summer in honesty.
