Arsenal target enjoying life in London

Reported Arsenal target Julio Cesar claims he is enjoying life in London so far, potentially dropping a hint at where his future lies. The Brazilian goalkeeper joined QPR last August from Inter Milan, but since QPR were relegated to the Championship, his future has been subject to speculation.

When asked about his son loving London and wanting to stay there, Cesar said the following:

"“Yes, me too. I love the city and I’m enjoying living there.” – Julio Cesar on life in London."

Arsenal have been the clear favourites in the betting for his signature, the bookmakers and fans seem to think Arsene Wenger will bring in an experienced goalkeeper to challenge Wojciech Szczesny for the number one jersey. Lukasz Fabianski impressed whilst having a spell in the team near the end of the season, before injury meant that Szczesny got the number one shirt back again and kept hold of it until the end of the season.

Vito Mannone is reportedly close to joining Sunderland, which would leave the Gunners with just two first-team goalkeepers. Damian Martinez made a couple of appearances for the first-team in the League Cup this season but it is believed that Arsene Wenger is keen on adding Julio Cesar to give Szczesny some experienced competition.

Whilst Cesar said nothing about Arsenal in that quote, it is unlikely he will want to stay at QPR playing in the second tier of English football. If Arsenal are seriously interested in him, I’d say they’ve got a good chance of getting him. QPR have money with Tony Fernandes as the majority shareholder in the club, but the club have lost a lot of money due to their relegation to the Championship and even if Cesar decides to stay, they have a lot of players on high wages that they may need to get rid of. Today they have agreed to sell Christopher Samba back to Anzhi Makhachkala for £12m. They signed Samba from the Russians for £12.5m back in January.

Samba was thought to be on wages of £100k+ a week. Cesar will be on a good wage at QPR. If Arsenal sign him, I’m sure they will sign him with the intent of him being their number one goalkeeper.

QPR’s Julio Cesar, a reported target of Arsenal’s, appears keen to stay in London.
