Olympiakos sign Joel Campbell on season-long loan deal

Arsenal’s Costa Rican striker Joel Campbell has joined Greek club Olympiakos on a season-long loan deal. Campbell joined Arsenal from Deportivo Saprissa in August 2011, but due to not receiving a work permit in England, he has spent the past two seasons out on loan at FC Lorient (2011/12) and Real Betis (2012/13).

As Greek champions, Olympiakos have booked their place in the Champions League group stages already. Arsenal have met Olympiakos at the group stage of the competition a few times in recent years (2009/10, 2011/12 and 2012/13). Should the two be paired again at any stage of the tournament, Campbell will be unavailable for the Greek club. Of course, Arsenal have to get through a qualifier before the two can even think about playing each other once again.

This move should be good for Campbell, who now has a work permit in England. This move is all about getting him further experience and sending him to a team in the Champions League won’t do him any harm at all. Hopefully we will see Campbell make the first-team at Arsenal in the near future, or at least get a chance.
