Match Preview: Arsenal vs. Bayern Munich

Laurent Koscielny scores a header goal against Bayern Munich during their Champions League match last year
Two of the best teams in Europe will meet at the Emirates Wednesday night, and the result will go a long way in determining the true merit of Arsenal’s squad this year.
We all know what Bayern Munich is. The best team in Europe. Treble-winners. A team that even after winning everything has improved their form and organization under a new manager.
It’s doubtful any viewer will have a changed opinion of Bayern after the match, providing they don’t lose 6-0 or something. Observers will be keen to judge Arsenal.
The flashes of brilliance from the Gunners have been augmented by some woeful performances: Shellackings at the Etihad and Anfield and a sleepy loss at Old Trafford. Simply put, Arsenal haven’t proven themselves against elite teams. The Champions League provides that test.
Last year these two teams played at the exact same stage of the competition, with Bayern barely sneaking by the Gunners on away goals after taking a 3-1 advantage into the second leg at home. That return leg was a the spark that ignited Arsenal’s incredible form to end their Barclays Premier League season in a Champions League spot and earn this shot at redemption.
Bayern does not come to north London with a fully stocked squad, however. Dynamic winger Frank Ribery and the in-form midfield Xherdan Shaqiri will miss due to injury, perhaps offset by Arsenal absentee Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey. To Bayern it should hardly matter, but it is less for their back line to worry about.
