Arsenal’s World Cup Winners!

facebooktwitterreddit

A huge congratulations to Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski who were victorious in last nights World Cup final in Brazil, beating South American side Argentina 1-0 after an extra time goal from Mario Gotze.

Arsenal are now the most successful English club when looking at World Cup’s won by players whilst at the club, overtaking West Ham and Manchester United who are both on three.

West Ham players supplied all 4 goals in the World Cup final back in 1966 with Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters and national legend Bobby Moore all turning out in Claret and Blue at the time. Manchester United all boasted three players in that England squad, Bobby Charlton, John Connelly and Nobby Stiles.

Arsenal’s winners have come more recently, with Petit and Viera won with France in 1998 and Cesc Fabregas with Spain in 2010. However they are far from the most successful European side in the competition.

Juventus lead the way with 22 players having won the World Cup whilst playing for the famous Italian side, and Bayern Munich come close in second with 21. No doubt this number has been helped by the strong Bayern influences of the 2014 Germany national team.

Obviously, to be at the top of this list, it helps if your national team win the trophy regularly, which is not something that England have done.
