Arsene Wenger Cannot Expect Arsenal to Cope with Giroud Loss
By Josh Sippie
Olivier Giroud seems to be under constant fire from Arsenal fans, but through it all, Arsene Wenger has always backed him, much like he did Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere. Despite all the calls for a new striker, his answer has always been Giroud.
Well, following the Everton draw, you can plainly see why.
Arsenal need that big physical target in the middle of the box to fend off defenders and establish position for crosses
Giroud fits perfectly into the Arsenal mold. So now that reports are stating that he could miss up to 3 months with a broken ankle, the Gunners may be in some deep trouble.
Wenger has always been stingy with his money, which isn’t always a bad thing. For one, he doesn’t make foolish purchases. That being said, he cannot possibly expect Arsenal to cope without Giroud with just their current striking options.
As we saw against Everton, while Alexis Sanchez is a fantastic attacker, he is not fully equipped to be the focal point of the Arsenal attack. With Ox, Alexis and Ozil as the front three against Everton, the attacking squadron looked feeble and completely nonthreatening.
Arsenal need that big physical target in the middle of the box to fend off defenders and establish position for crosses. Sanogo is tall, but he’s lanky and lacks the strength that Giroud has. Walcott, Ox and Sanchez are pacey and creative but lack height.
Arsenal need a direct replacement for Giroud, someone who is a big, aerial threat. And a secondary striker will give Wenger many more options, and options are never a bad thing. Not only that, but it will put pressure on Giroud to always be at his best. He has no threats to his starting job right now. Competition is a fantastic way to make sure everyone stays on top of their game.
What say you, do Arsenal wait it out and weather the storm, or add another striker?
