Danny Welbeck Signing Should Please Olivier Giroud

When Olivier Giroud went down with a seemingly innocuous injury against Everton, it was after a dynamite performance that raised a lot of Gunner’s fan’s hopes after the tall Frenchman’s disappointing previous matches. However, that injury required surgery and left a void upfront that Yaya Sanogo was in no way able to fill.

The answer that Arsene Wenger provided to the question was Danny Welbeck.

If Welbeck can succeed up front, then Giroud can’t just sit on his haunches and enjoy his job security

This signing makes sense on so many levels and nobody should be more excited about it then Giroud himself, and here’s why:

Number one, Wenger didn’t go for a direct replacement for Giroud (i.e. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar) and he didn’t upgrade to a Falcao or Edinson Cavani (though many would have preferred that). Instead, he purchased a young striker with potential who can contribute to the team outside of being a striker (something Huntelaar, Falcao and Cavani couldn’t provide).

What does that mean for GIroud?

It means Wenger has faith in him (in case he somehow didn’t know that already). The spot is still Giroud’s. Even if Welbeck is absolutely dazzling for the remainder of 2014, when Giroud comes back, he’ll slot in up front, but even then, we won’t lose Welbeck’s services. He can move out to wing or even provide cover as a second striker (which I’m a fan of).

Number two, it’ll put a little added pressure on Giroud to stay in form. If Welbeck can succeed up front, and I strongly believe he can, then Giroud can’t just sit on his haunches and enjoy his job security. He’ll have to perform at the top of his game and that should be welcomed by him.

And number three is kind of a moot point, but it makes the team better, and Giroud is part of that team.

Anyways, despite what many are calling a disappointing transfer deadline day, Wenger popped out Danny Welbeck at the end. It’s a move that, the more I think about, the more I like. I’m almost more excited to see what Welbeck can contribute when paired with Giroud then when he’s by himself. It could be a seriously dynamic striker combo, as their styles of play compliment each other so well.
