Yaya Sanogo Shining for France U21 Squad
By Josh Sippie
Yaya Sanogo has had quite the journey recently. After absolutely demolishing in the Emirates Cup, scoring four times in one game, he went on to gain the starting striker role when his countryman Olivier Giroud went down with a broken leg.
Sanogo promptly lost that starting role after he continued to be unable to put the ball in the back of the net in competitive matches. Instead, Arsenal opted to sign the young Englishman Danny Welbeck.
Now that we’re on international break, Sanogo again found himself in a starting role, this time for the France U21 side in their first match against Kazakhstan.
Sanogo scored twice in the 5-1 win, and while the first goal could be attributed to a fortuitous deflection, the second goal stemmed from excellent hustle and effort, as he clipped the goalie and pressed on to tap the ball into the far corner. It was pure justice that the ball went in, given the hard work he put in to get there.

No one doubts that Sanogo has gobs of potential, but potential doesn’t score goals in the Premier League. Sanogo has scored rather easily on just about every other stage except for competitive English League games (EPL, FA Cup, etc).
It’s clear that he can do it, and once he scores his first in the EPL, it might well open the flood gates for a cascade of pent-up goals. But the struggle remains where it always has – scoring that first goal. He’s now had 17 appearances in the EPL and no goals to speak of.
Yaya Sanogo has the undying support of Arsene Wenger and his team mates, so he’ll be given every chance in the world to prove he’s worth it. He just needs to focus and repay his skipper’s trust.
Sanogo’s next match comes Monday, September 8th against the Iceland U21’s. I would not at all be surprised to see him put a couple of more goals in.
