Edinson Cavani has been linked to Arsenal for what seems like a millenium, and the linkage continues as Cavani is again rumored to be heading to the Emirates in January. Again, rumors will be rumors, but most rumors have long since dissipated by now.

If Wenger spends big money in January, let it be for a holding midfielder and some defensive backs

The newest boost to his likelihood of suiting up for the Gunners comes from a press conference by Arsene Wenger in which he made note of Cavani’s skill and – you guessed it – his likelihood to move away from PSG, where he has to play behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Wenger is a tricky little bugger who seems to always give the media enough for them to read into every sentence he speaks down to the puncutation marks, but is this transfer ever really going to happen?

I for one, am still not convinced. If Arsenal were going to get Cavani, why didn’t they grab him during the summer window instead of Welbeck?

With the recent Arsenal financial report being unveiled, it was very apparent that Wenger still has gobs of money at his disposal. While we already knew this, it helped to reinforce the point that there are very few people in the world of football that Wenger couldn’t afford.

This could be seen as a similar situation to Danny Welbeck. Welbeck was highly-touted but trapped behind a multitude of striking options at Manchester United. Wenger grabbed Welbeck and “let the peacock fly” at the front of the Arsenal attack. Rescuing Cavani from underneath the Sweedish Behemoth could put some pep in his step and propel him to absolutely devour the Premier League.

But my bet’s still on this not happening.

More from Arsenal Transfer Rumours

Adding a guy like Edinson Cavani would be great, obviously, he’s a fantastic player. But I’ve been following this rumor since it’s conception and I feel like a parent whose son won’t get a job and get out of the house.

Even without Cavani, the Arsenal attack is stacking up pretty well as is, especially with Theo Walcott due back (although the timetable of his return is painfully confusing). If Wenger spends big money in January, let it be for a holding midfielder and some defensive backs, not on a new playtoy that, while fun, isn’t entirely necessary.
